What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a natural-looking and durable tooth replacement solution designed to replicate the look, feel, and function of real teeth. By surgically inserting a titanium alloy post into the jaw bone, a dental implant mimics a tooth root, stimulating the jaw bone to maintain oral health. An abutment and crown are placed on top of the post to restore full functionality and aesthetics to one’s smile. With proper care, implants are a long-lasting, life-changing, and durable solution for tooth loss.

What Are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

  • Revitalize Your Smile: Because a replacement tooth seamlessly blends in with your adjacent teeth, they are an ideal tooth replacement solution that restores your smile, improving its aesthetics.
  • Maintain Facial Structure and Symmetry: Dental implant placements stimulates the jaw bone, preventing deterioration. When the jaw bone is not stimulated, it can atrophy, causing the face to look sunken.
  • Improve Oral Health: By stimulating the jaw bone, your jaw remains healthy. Artificial teeth can also prevent dental crowding or misalignment, both of which can create other oral health complications, like gum disease or nerve damage.
  • Long-Lasting: Thanks to their durability, prosthetic teeth have the potential to last a lifetime so long as they are well cared for. Once they fuse to the jaw bone, they are a permanent addition to your smile.
  • Secure and Comfortable: Unlike removable dentures, implants do not slip. They are permanently affixed to your jaw bone. Because of this, they act like natural teeth, allowing you to eat, speak, and smile with confidence.

What Types of Dental Implants Are Offered?

There are many types of dental treatments designed to meet various needs:

1. Single tooth replacement: If you are missing a single tooth, an implant can fill the void where a tooth used to be.

2. Multiple teeth replacement: To replace multiple missing teeth, implants can support a partial dental bridge or denture.

3. Immediate implants: Depending on your unique situation, you may be eligible to have an implant placed on the same day as an extraction.

4. Full-arch restoration: Full-arch restoration can replace an entire arch of teeth by using dental implants as a secure base for a permanent prosthetic.

5. Zygomatic implants: For patients with severe jaw bone loss, zygomatic implants provide an alternative to traditional endosteal implants because they are placed into the cheek bone.

6. Zirconia implants: If you have a metal allergy or desire a metal-free tooth replacement option, a zirconia implant is made of ceramic and can serve as an excellent tooth replacement option.

How Does Dental Implant Surgery Work?

Before any procedure at our practice, you will meet with one of our oral surgeons for a consultation. During this consultation, your surgeon will perform a comprehensive oral exam, including taking 3D scans, to assess your condition before discussing potential treatment options. You will also have the chance to discuss the most appropriate anesthesia choice, which will be administered before your procedure.

Your surgery will begin once you receive anesthesia. Once it has taken full effect, your oral surgeon will begin the procedure by making an incision into your gums to expose the jaw bone. From there, the implant will be placed. Once the implant is placed, an abutment will be placed. However, the crown may not be placed during this visit. If that is the case, a temporary crown will be placed.

Before your permanent crown is placed, the implant needs to fully fuse with your jaw bone in a process known as osseointegration. Once this is complete, the implant is fully stable and can support your new tooth. Only then will you receive the final, custom-made crown that will restore your beautiful smile.

Types of Anesthesia

There are three main types of anesthesia that we use at our practice:

" With Dr. Ben Johnson, I've had a sinus lift with bone grafting, and we're in the process of that healing, and another couple months, I'll get the caps put in. I'm the type of person where I have a lot of dental problems because of family history, and they just make you feel very comfortable when you come in. They ask you at your pre-op appointments if you have any questions. They ask you when you come in for the operative appointment if you have any questions, "Are you comfortable?" It's just very relaxed, and when you wake up, they come and they talk to you; they tell you how everything's gone, and then they call you that day or the next day to make sure that you're still feeling okay, and so everything is just a very smooth, flowing process. That's why I keep coming is because they're so personable, and they really care about you as a patient. "

"Hi, I'm Jason. I'm from Bonnie Lake. I had a extraction, a bone graft, and a implant from Dr. Ben Johnson. When I walked into the practice, I felt very comfortable. It was very welcoming. Dr. Ben Johnson, very warm. He was pretty funny. Prior to the procedure, I did get some information. Very good at telling you what the next steps were and just keeping you informed over the process. My procedure went very well. I'm in recovery. I spent one day that day at home and then I was back, back to work the next day. The overall experience here for the procedure has been great. I feel very comfortable about coming here for any other procedure."

"I had a little pain in one of my upper molars on my left side, so he recommended that I probably just have it removed and get the implant done now. And then they explained the entire process to me of how I'd have the extraction done and then the sinus lift, the implant in place, and then a cap on the abutment that goes into the implant. It went well, and I did it late one day, and I was back at work the next day, so no complaints. There never really was any real pain—a very slight discomfort. Everything for me was pretty much back to normal within 24 hours. I'd highly recommend the clinic here. The Dr. Johnson that assisted me was Dr. Ben Johnson; I don't know that a doctor could have done anything any better than the way Ben did."

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do dental implants get cavities?

Unlike natural teeth, a replacement tooth is not susceptible to cavities. However, it is vital to maintain good oral hygiene to maintain overall oral health and preserve the integrity of the implant.

2. How long does the dental implant procedure take?

The implant process cannot be rushed. Therefore, it is difficult to estimate the duration of the procedure. Factors like the number of implants and the case’s complexity impact how long the procedure will take. On average, the procedure takes about an hour for a single implant. Again, however, this is not guaranteed. Your oral surgeon can provide you with a better estimate based on your unique case.

3. Who is not a candidate for dental implants?

Many patients are eligible for dental implants. However, patients with severe bone loss, periodontal disease, or other medical conditions may not be suitable for the procedure. To see whether you are an ideal candidate, consult with an oral surgeon.

4. How can I ensure the longevity of my dental implants?

To maintain implant success, brush, floss, and attend dental visits regularly. Immediately following surgery, it’s important to adhere to any postoperative instructions to ensure a smooth healing process and long-term success.
